The commonest method of access to computer systems for most people is by the use of a plastic card. So far these devices have carried only limited information, but recently demand has increased for 'intelligent' cards which actually contain processing power within the card. In addition to these Smart Cards, there is an even greater demand for Memory Cards which can store large amounts of information. This book describes, from the user perspective, the increasing utilisation of Smart Cards and Memory Cards and, therefore, the subsequent need for an understanding of their methods of operation; the application areas that could benefit from such devices; the special security features required. The author provides details of products that are commercially available and gives an overview of the many and complex arguments that accompany any decision to introduce a smart or memory card application. The overall intention is to provide prospective end-users with basic guidelines to enable them to ask the right questions of card suppliers.
