Plot

This is the story of an African-American family living in the South sometime between the American Civil War and 1900. Sounder is the family's great hunting-dog, terribly injured by a shotgun when his master is arrested for stealing a ham. He recovers and awaits his master's return, but when the father comes back he too is maimed.
