The story is about a girl named Ronia who is the daughter of a chief of a tribe of bandits and lives in a huge castle in the forest with the bandits. The story follows Ronia as she encounters mystical creatures, makes friends with another young child like herself, and experiences life in the forest.
Ronja is born
Ronja grows to be a lively ten-year-old and is given permission to go outside of the fort and into the forest.
Ronja falls asleep in the forest and wakes up surrounded by threatening gray dwarfs.
Ronja is chased by the harpies and sees something unexpected.
Ronja learns that Birk, the boy she met at Hell's Gap, is the son of Borka, the longtime adversary of her father Mattis.
Mattis and his robbers face off at Hell's Gap against Borka and his twelve robbers.
Whilst walking through the mist, Ronja is tempted by the sweet, plaintive song of the Unearthly Ones.
Ronja heads off into the forest, wondering why she hasn't seen Birk all autumn.
Whilst out practicing skiing, Ronja takes a tumble on the slopes.
Ronja struggles to free herself from a hole before heavy snowfall comes.
Ronja falls ill and spends three days in bed.
Ronja manages to reunite with Birk again.
Lovis orders all the robbers to wash their dirty bodies in the snow.
Spring returns to the forest.
The conflict between Mattis and Borka intensifies, distressing Ronja.
Ronja decides upon a daring act that will change everything.
Ronja and Birk head back into the forest.
Ronja and Birk hear something moving around inside a cave.
Ronja and Birk have a big argument over a lost knife.
Ronja and Birk try to tame some wild horses.
Whilst bathing, Ronja and Birk are attacked by a flock of wild harpies.
Ronja and Birk are startled to find someone waiting for them.
Mattis startles Birk with an unexpected offer.
Ronja offers an unexpected suggestion.
The two bands of robbers agree to join forces.
The robbers return to their robbing ways and Skalle-Per tells Ronja a secret.
