When cop John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) crosses the line in the capture of crime lord Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes), both he and Phoenix end up on ice in the newest form of incarceration. Fast forward nearly forty years to the 2032, the once violent anarchic city of Los Angeles has now become a clean and saintly city and has been renamed San Angeles to boot. Unfortunately not everyone is clean and in fact the mayor, Raymond Cocteau (Nigel Hawthorne) orchestrates the escape of Phoenix. After his escape the sanitized and non-violent police force quickly realizes that they cannot stop him so they decide to bring back the only man that was ever able to stop him and that is John Spartan. Spartan is out of place in this sterile future, but Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock) is willing to partner up with him. Together the two of them must stop Phoenix from completing the purpose of his escape, which is to kill Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary) resistance leader and enemy of the mayor. Will they succeed or will it just be a demolition?
