An ex-policeman named Jericho Cane (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who has given up on the idea of religious faith after the brutal murder of his wife and daughter, finds himself embroiled in an apocalyptic struggle. He must protect a 20-year-old woman named Christine York (Robin Tunney) as she fights against a destiny that may threaten the future of the entire world. Christine is being menaced by a mysterious man (Gabriel Byrne) who, she finds out to her horror, is actually the Devil. She is his chosen bride, and he is determined to father a child with her during the last hour of the millennium. If he fails, he has to wait another thousand years to try again, but if he succeeds, it means the end of the world. To save her, Cane must fight his own inner demons as well as the very real ones that threaten the Earth.
