We normally think of religious conversion as a dramatic change in lifestyle with particular emphasis on churchgoing habits. William Barry describes it in a different way. Conversion, says Barry, is a turning away from illusion and toward reality. The "good news" is the happy knowledge that we can rid ourselves of fear and live in affectionate community with other people, thereby finding a deeper communion with God and with the universe.
