Knight Moves is the story of an exceptional chess player named Peter Sanderson (Christopher Lambert) who, along with his lover, travels to participate in one of the world’s most prestigious chess tournaments. One night he comes home from the tournament to find his girlfriend brutally murdered. He is at first implicated in the crime as the murderer, but he is able to prove his innocence to the police. That night, he is phoned by the actual killer who entices him to play a game with him that has grave stakes and fatal consequences. Peter agrees and with the help of police captain Frank Sedman (Tom Skerritt) begind to stalk the killer.

A chess grandmaster is in a big tournament, and when his lover is found painted up and the blood drained out of her body he becomes a chief suspect. After he gets a call from the killer urging him to try and figure out the game, he cooperates with police and a psychologist to try and catch the killer, but doubts linger about the grandmaster's innocence as the string of grisly murders continues.
