De film is gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van Richard Phillips, kapitein van het vrachtschip Maersk Alabama. In 2009 werd dit schip door Somalische piraten gekaapt en Phillips gaf zichzelf op als gijzelaar, om zijn bemanning te redden.
