Plot

From Kirkus Reviews A nicely rhymed text goes beyond the obvious ``Lions roar'' and ``Cows moo'' to include the likes of beavers, parrots, and even, as a refrain, ``girls and boys make a different noise!''- -with examples of their singing, chuckling, talking, etc. captioning Wellington's bold, simple, but effective illustrations. An attractive extension of an old idea. (Picture book. 1-4) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. Product Description Rhyming text enumerates the many different sounds made by animals, from the chatter of monkeys to the neighing of ponies From School Library Journal PreSchool-K-- Twenty-four animal noises are presented in rhyming verse in this fairly lively picture book. "Monkeys chatter. Cats purr." The refrain "But girls and boys make different noise!" ends each of the three eight-line verses. With the first refrain only two children are pictured, along with the eight animals mentioned so far. The noises the children make move from whispers and giggles to shouts and screams as they are joined by two more children and another eight animals for each of the remaining refrains. This adds a bit of surprise and fun, making it more than merely a list of animal sounds. The illustrations are clear, bright, and simple, but unexceptional. The bold lines and bright, varied background colors will work well in a storytime presentation. A couple of the animal sounds are confusing because the descriptive word is not the same as the actual noise. Coyotes do bay, but they do not say "Bay bay bay . . ." as pictured here. And a few of the sounds given are not the ones most children would guess ("Parrots shriek . . . Flies hum.") Despite these minor flaws, Who Says What? is a solid addition to preschool shelves, although it's not as distinctive as Brandenberg's Cock-a-Doodle-Doo (Greenwillow, 1986; o.p.) or Peter Spier's Gobble, Growl, Grunt (Doubleday, 1988). --Steven Engelfried, Pleasanton Lib . , CACopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
