Ex-Secret Security Agent Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis) is now a private detective in Los Angeles. He lost his government post because he punched Senator Calvin Baynard (Chelcie Ross) while serving as the Senator’s bodyguard. to stop him from hurting a woman. His day starts off badly when he discovers that his business partner and friend Mike Matthews (Bruce McGill) has been sleeping with Joe’s wife. Nonetheless, when Mike gives Joe the task of protecting Cory (Halle Berry), an exotic dancer, and then is killed by an explosion shortly after that, “Boy Scout” that he is, Joe decides to continue the job. Almost immediately, ex-football star Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans), Cory’s extremely protective boyfriend, misunderstands the situation. However, when Joe and Cory are attacked as Jimmy watches and Cory is killed, Joe and Jimmy decide to work together to find her killers. Jimmy also has ties to Senator Baynard in that he was set up on a false sports gambling charge that ended his career and Senator Baynard is involved in a conspiracy to legalize sports gambling. Cory had ties to the Senator as well, because she had proof that Baynard’s fellow conspirators, including the owner of the NFL team Jimmy used to play for, plan to assassinate him rather than deal with him. Lots of car chases, bad words, blood and explosions follow as Joe and Jimmy work to foil the plot.
