Rose Calvert (Gloria Stuart) was startled to see a drawing on the TV news that she hadn’t seen since 1912. The drawing was brought up from the wreck of the Titanic, and Rose knew she was the girl in the picture, so she had her granddaughter contact the man responsible for the find. Traveling to the north Atlantic where the Titanic lies, Rose told her story to the assembled treasure-seekers. As a young woman Rose (Kate Winslet) was engaged to the wealthy Cal (Billy Zane), and traveled with him and her mother on the Titanic. Rebellious Rose hated her life to the point she tried to commit suicide. Her attempt was thwarted, however, by a young steerage passenger, Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). Rose ends up falling in love with the independent Jack, much to the consternation of her fiancé and mother. Cal framed Jack for stealing an expensive necklace he purchased for Rose, and Jack was handcuffed in a lower level cabin. The ship was sinking as Rose rushed to find Jack and save him. She refused to get into a life boat and stayed with Jack to the end.
