This volume constitutes both a reevaluation of standard critical approaches to Franz Kafka and a major reinterpretation of his fiction. The thrust of the author's critique is to challenge the tendency, prevalent in Kafka scholarship, to interpret Kafka's fiction in terms of a theme or figure of speech. Yet in questioning this tendency, the author does seek to understand what it is in the nature of Kafka's fiction that has systematically encouraged such readings.
