In the year 2035, convict James Cole volunteers reluctantly to be sent back in time by scientists to discover the origin of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly all of the earth's population decades earlier. But when Cole is sent mistakenly to 1990 instead of 1996, he's arrested and locked up in a mental hospital, where he meets a psychiatrist and the son of a famous virus expert.

WSR Narrative Review

Special Notes:
Also available in a DTS Version, Catalog Number 20462. DVD jacket erroneously indicates French subtitles are present on disc.

Story Synopsis:
“12 Monkeys” is based on the film “La Jetee,” where between the past and the future lies the mystery of the Twelve Monkeys. The year is 2035 and humankind subsists under the Earth’s surface in a desolate netherworld following an airborne viral holocaust. Desperately, scientists time shuttle convict James Cole (Willis) to the past in hopes of discovering a means of saving the future. When Cole arrives in 1996, his tale of global annihilation deems him mad and he is placed in an asylum where he meets Jeffrey Goines (Pitt), the delusional son of a renowned scientist. Cole is treated by Dr. Kathryn Railly (Stowe), a psychiatrist who comes to believe him. Their only clue to the mystery of the virus is a series of puzzling symbols from a group known only as the Army Of The Twelve Monkeys. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The dual layer anamorphic DVD is dramatic with stylized contrast and shadow detail. Images are sharper with more fine detail and definition when compared to the LaserDiscs reviewed in Issues 24 and 25. Color fidelity is more fully saturated with better definition. The picture is solid throughout, lacking noise, grain and pixelization. Minor artifacts are still apparent. The anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio is properly framed at 1.85:1.

Soundtrack:
The sound is virtually identical between the Dolby® Digital soundtracks on LaserDisc and DVD, with a well recorded music score, natural sounding dialogue, deep bass extension and effectively spread directional effects in the split surrounds.
