Story Synopsis:
"21 Grams" is the story of three very different but equally troubled people whose lives unexpectedly cross paths. Paul (Penn) is a married man in desperate need of a heart transplant. Cristina (Watts) lives with her husband Michael (Huston) and their two daughters, while Jack (Del Toro) is a born-again Christian who has served time in prison. When Paul is suddenly given a new heart, he goes to great measures to find out how he acquired his second chance at life, but what he discovers is more tragic than he could ever have imagined. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD, framed at 1.85:1, exhibits a picture that is stylized with a gritty appearance. Images are sharp and detailed, though a little bit “edgy” at times. There are scenes that have a highly contrasted, blown-out quality, while others are naturally balanced. Colors have a desaturated appearance. There is some pixelization and occasional loss or smearing of finer details, but edge enhancement is minimal. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
Both the Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround™ 5.1-channel soundtracks exhibit above average fidelity and very neutral tonality. The performance of the audio is as expected with the majority of sonic information present in the front three screen channels. The surround channels project proper ambience and atmosphere, as well. There is a very minimal use of the LFE channel, but the lack of any low bass extension doesn’t negatively effect the outcome of the audio presentation. Both soundtracks are very good, but the DTS wins out by giving a more open, involving, and immersive experience. (Jeffrey Kern)
