Notes

Story Synopsis:
After retiring from a career as an insurance company actuary, Warren Schmidt (Nicholson) finds himself wondering what to do with the rest of his life. Although bored with his life and his wife, he finds himself depressed and lonely after she suddenly dies, so Warren decides to take a trip to visit his daughter Jeannie (Davis) who is engaged to marry Randall (Mulroney), a man whom Warren doesn’t feel is worthy of his only daughter. After meeting Randall’s mother Roberta (Bates), Warren not only learns more than he ever wanted to know about his daughter’s relationship with Randall, but he discovers something “About Schmidt“ that he hadn’t known before. Based on the novel by Louis Begley. (Tricia Littrell)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a picture that is generally sharp and detailed, though some scenes can have a slightly soft focus or appear somewhat smeared in the backgrounds. Colors are richly saturated, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are perfectly balanced for a very natural appearance. There is some minor edge enhancement that can be noticed in certain scenes, and pixelization is also quite limited. Overall, this DVD is quite natural looking with a clean, solid picture that is more than suitable for the storytelling. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The 5.1 audio presentations are reserved in spatial soundstaging character. Fidelity is very impressive, though. The music, like many other movies, essentially carries the dimensionality for this soundtrack. It has been very well-recorded and has an engaging, panoramic presence across the screen with subtle depth into the surrounds. There’s also a palpable low-end foundation. The dialogue, which predominates the sound mix, sounds slightly forward but otherwise is abundantly natural-sounding. The DTS® Digital Surround™ audio version seemed to be a bit more definite in spatial resolution, yet the Dolby® Digital audio sounded a little fuller in the low-end. (Perry Sun)
