Story Synopsis:
Following the success of the wildly original Being John Malkovich, screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Cage) is taking a stab at an Adaptation. A bit neurotic and slightly paranoid, the gifted Kaufman has been hired to script Susan Orlean’s bestseller The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean (Streep). His work is slowed even more when his twin brother Donald Kaufman (also played by Cage)-quite the extrovert-moves in and decides to take up screenwriting for himself. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced Superbit 1.85:1 DVD has a mostly understated look, with a simple, natural color scheme. Hues are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Images are generally sharp, with nicely rendered textures and details. Contrast can seem a bit low at times, but shadow delineation is satisfying for the darkest scenes. There is some edge enhancement noticed at times, but pixelization is rarely a problem. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel sound mix has been well-recorded, with voices and effects sounding convincingly natural. The dialogue, which predominates this sonic presentation, seems comfortable to hear and is abundantly articulate. The soundstage is quite reserved in nature, with usually a very gentle sense of spatial expansion. Some interesting POV sequences provide for enhanced envelopment and some special creativity, such as the “thoughts,” for which the dialogue slightly spreads beyond center channel. Deep bass and dynamic range are appropriately reserved. The DTS® Digital Surround™ and Dolby® Digital audio versions are essentially identical, with the former distinguishing itself just slightly in terms of the sense of spatial coherence. (Perry Sun)
