Story Synopsis:
A seamless blend of animation and computer generated imagery, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is yet another ambitious Disney creation, suitable for an audience a little bit older than the studio’s typical target audience for animated features. It’s the early 20th century, and Milo Thatch (Fox) is determined to continue his late grandfather's search for the lost, sunken empire of Atlantis. Backed financially by an eccentric millionaire (Mahoney), Milo heads to sea, engages in battle with monstrous sea machines, and discovers the lost empire. But when he learns that some of his fellow expeditioners turn greedy, Milo needs to muster up the courage to protect Atlantis, rather than explore it. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The all-digital, anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD (not identified as anamorphically enhanced on the jacket) exhibits sharp and detailed animated images. Color balance is superb, with rich, solid hues. There are no signs of edge enhancement which can distract from even the best animated features. The picture is clean and solid, and should surely delight its target audience. (Suzanne Hodges)
The DVD also includes a modified 1.33:1 version (not reviewed).
Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel soundtracks, Surround EX™-encoded, are superb, very well-recorded, and downright powerful at times. The sonic experience as a whole should be wholly engrossing and entertaining, as well as sure to appeal to all fans of full-fledged surround sound. The production definitely sounds to be state-of-the-art, with tasteful, crafty utilization of the multidimensional soundfield, and a first-rate music score recording from Shawn Murphy. The dialogue production is one of the best in terms of natural tonality and generation of spatial ambience that seems very nicely suited to the visual environments. The soundstage across the screen is wonderfully expansive and enveloping, and integration of the stereo surrounds is fully effective, whether subtle or aggressive in nature. The use of the back surround for Surround EX or DTS-ES® decoding is very effective at times, both with expanding the sense of atmospheric spaciousness and back surround-specific effects. You’ll get a generous dosage of both in the opening sequence. Another fantastic example is in Chapter 8. The deep bass presence with this soundtrack is absolutely wonderful, and even sure to pose a challenge to your system. There are generous dosages of extremely deep bass below 25 Hz, emanating from all channels, as well as prominent usage of the .1 LFE. Additionally, the low-end with the music score should be delightful to experience. The DTS® Digital Surround™ version (available only on the two-disc Collector’s Edition) provides for the slightly preferred listening experience, sounding slightly more expansive and cohesive spatially, and offering a little more in the low-end. This soundtrack is definitely one of the best currently available, with superb audio recording quality, and first-rate dynamics and creativity. Another very fine outing from the team at Skywalker Sound, led by Gary Rydstrom. (Perry Sun)
