Story Synopsis:
Just because you can kick a ball doesn’t mean you can Bend It Like Beckham, a star football player who aspiring player Jessminder Bamhra (Nagra) looks up to. But her traditional Indian family living in West London wants her to find a nice Indian boy and stick with tradition. But one day, while playing a friendly game with the boys in the park, she meets Jules (Knightley), who invites her to try out for a local semi-pro women’s football (soccer to North Americans) team. Forced to hide her time on the field from her family, Jess presses on toward football superstardom. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a picture with colors that can appear a bit exaggerated at times. Hues seem a bit plugged-up and fleshtones can appear a bit sickly (a little on the green side). Images are generally sharp and detailed, but fine textures are limited. Pixelization is often noticed breaking up finer details, but edge enhancement is rarely a problem. The picture is by no means terrible, it just can appear a bit “digital” and unnatural. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 has been rather nicely recorded. The soundstage presentation is quite typical, with dialogue-dominant scenes often being very modest in spatiality, and the presence of some atmosphere otherwise. The music is the dominant spatial element of the sound mix, with an aggressive presence all around including the surrounds. There's also palpable low-end content, in the surround channels as well. Voices sound convincingly natural and nicely integrated with the visuals. (Perry Sun)
