Notes

Story Synopsis:
Edward Bloom (Finney) didn’t want to be the Big Fish in the small pond of his life. While raising his son William (Crudup), Edward would share his larger-than-life stories...but it left the grown William wondering who his father really was. Called to visit Edward on his deathbed, William and his wife Josephine (Cotillard) attempt to get inside Edward’s tall tales and separate the man from the myth. Inevitably, William learns what a wonderful man his father was and that sometimes stories are better told with embellishments. Tim Burton’s "Big Fish," based on the novel by Daniel Wallace, is a captivating tale! (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
Philippe Rousselot’s captivating cinematography is presented with pleasing quality on this anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD. Images often have a hazy appearance that add a nostalgic look that is complementary to the storytelling. Colors can be well balanced with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks, or other times border oversaturation with vibrant hues that visually contribute to the movie’s tall tales. The picture can be very dark, but shadow delineation and contrast are satisfying. Other scenes can be overly bright and glowing but all part of the picture’s stylized themes. There is some pixelization noticed at times, but edge enhancement is rarely detected. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack exhibits excellent fidelity and accurate tonal characteristics. The charming, and very often poetic, original score by Danny Elfman perfectly reflects the vividly imaginative storybook tone of the film. Dialogue properly resides in the front center channel with the other two front screen channels housing the majority of the remaining soundtrack audio information. The LFE channel is active and powerful throughout, with the surround channels providing more than adequate atmosphere and ambience. These three channels, in addition to the front three screen channels, work wonderfully together to place the listener in an effective and immersive holosonic™ soundfield. (Jeffrey Kern)
