WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Big Lebowski is another hilariously original comedy from the Coen brothers-the creative masterminds behind Fargo and Raising Arizona. The Dude (Bridges) feels a bit violated. Two thugs looking for Jeff Lebowski-the Dude’s real name-have broken into the Dude’s home, demanded money to pay off a debt, and soiled his favorite rug. The Dude, realizing this is a case of mistaken identity, seeks out The Big Lebowski, who was the real target of the beating-to get him to pay for his ruined rug.
DVD Picture:
When compared to the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 29, the anamorphic DVD is a beautiful, solid transfer. Images are sharper with more detail and definition than the LaserDisc. Color fidelity is naturally rendered, with accurate fleshtones, rich colors and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are superb, with excellent visual information in the darkest scenes. The anamorphic and letterbox DVD aspect ratio is framed at 1.78:1.
Soundtrack:
While the Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack has slight dialogue leakage in the front channels, the discrete delivers generally good soundstage delineation. Surround presence is limited to the music score. Spatial dimension is wanting in aggressive envelopment, though there are occasional split surrounds and .1 LFE enhancement.
