Story Synopsis:
"Brother Bear" is the story of a boy who becomes a man by becoming a bear. Kenai (Phoenix) is a young man set on revenge against a bear he feels is responsible for his brother’s death. Going up against the beast and winning the battle, the great Spirits who guide Kenai transform him into a bear himself. As he lives life in the wild and communicates with the other animals, Kenai is taught a valuable lesson about the hunted and those who do the hunting. Fans of Strange Brew will delight in the voices of Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis as two wisecracking Moose, eh. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphicallly enhanced 2.35:1-framed DVD picture on Disc Two (with the first 20-minutes or so presented in 1.78:1 within the 2.35:1 frame) offers digital-to-digital animated images that are of excellent quality. Supporting the natural environments depicted in the story, the colors of the wild are offered in a lovely palette of greens and browns of the earth and gorgeous oranges and violets of sunsets. There are a few instances in which minor halos are noticed around images, but nothing that is seriously distracting. (Suzanne Hodges)
An alternate non-theatrical, yet still widescreen 1.66:1 “Family Friendly” version appears on Disc One.
Soundtrack:
Both 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround™ presentations sound fantastic. Fidelity, tonality, soundstaging, and imaging are superb as the sonic images included in both encoded surround sound formats wrap themselves around the listener in very convincing fashion. Horizontal pans across the front three channels are excellent, as side-to-side movements between the left and right front channels are very smooth and transition beautifully. Dialogue is placed naturally within the home theatre environment with pinpoint accuracy within the soundstage. LFE activity is another strong point. There may not be a consistent LFE presence throughout the film, but when the low end is needed, the bass is tight and powerful. The music used in the film, as it seems in almost every Disney production, is excellent. The song by Phil Collins highlights the musical presentation. Overall, there is a very nice feel to the audio mix in either DTS or Dolby Digital. The DTS mix (included only with the 2.35:1 verison) has some better presence, is more open, and demonstrates more of a three-dimensional sound and feel than the Dolby Digital version. (Jeffrey Kern)
