Story Synopsis:
Eve’s Bayou is the sweltering tale of the Batiste family living in rural Louisiana. Young Eve witnesses her father Louis (a prominent doctor) as he “attends” to a young woman. Eve turns to her mother, sister and Aunt Mozelle who all brush off her fears in one way or another and Louis’ infidelities become more apparent to the rest of the family. As the tensions rise in the Batiste home, Eve decides to take the matter of her father’s behavior into her own hands. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
The 1.85:1 DVD is not anamorphic, and exhibits fully saturated hues, with natural fleshtones and deep blacks. Images are sharp and detailed, though sometimes softly focused. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered as is the overall picture. There is only minor noise, but no artifacts for a picture that is appealing throughout. The opening black-and-white sequence, and sporadic scenes throughout, exhibit a stylistically contrasted, harsh grayscale.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack contains compressed dialogue and compromised intelligibility. Much of the sound is driven by mono-directed dialogue, and sound effects are basically front-channel oriented, with subtle ambience fill-in for the surrounds. Surprisingly, there’s a few intense moments of .1 LFE. The fidelity of the music is good, though it seems to compete with the dialogue at times.
