College professor Ira Kane is invited by geology teacher/girls' volleyball coach Harry Block to investigate a meteorite that has crashed through the surface rock into a network of underground caverns under the sleepy town of Glen Canyon, Arizona. They collect a sample and find that it consists extraterrestrial, single-celled, nitrogen-based organisms, which evolve rapidly.

Story Synopsis:
Ivan Reitman, who made “ghostbusting” a household word, now takes on the theory of Evolution. Alien stowaways on a meteor are the discovery of a lifetime for two hapless community college professors (Duchovny and Jones) and a spaced-out fireman wannabe (Scott). Unfortunately for them, the government wants in on this discovery, especially a sexy but clumsy scientist (Moore). When the rapidly evolving aliens break out of their enclosure, “survival of the fittest” takes on a whole new meaning. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture exhibits sharp and nicely detailed images, with good contrast and shadow delineation. There are a few scenes that appear somewhat soft or smeared, but overall the image is satisfying. Colors are rich and vibrant, with accurate fleshiness, and deep blacks. Edge enhancement can be obtrusive, but pixelization and shimmering details are minimal. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel soundtracks both feature impressive fidelity, as well as engagement of the dimensional soundfield that seems to be predominated by the music. Though there certainly are moments for which the soundstage becomes prominently active with aggressive surrounds, much of the audio is actually of a more subtle nature. The music has been well-recorded, and nicely permeates throughout the listening space. Screen-based imaging is impressively panoramic in nature. Low-end extension is remarkable for the music, as well as selected effects, especially the explosions toward the beginning the of the film that can be system-challenging, along with some .1 LFE activity. Voices sound impressively natural, and spatial integration is outstanding. The DTS® Digital Surround™ version just slightly edges out over the Dolby® Digital audio, in terms of spatial resolution and deep bass presence. Otherwise, both are fine sonic presentations that are not necessarily distinguished from the best of the current 5.1 soundtracks, but nonetheless should be satisfying and entertaining. (Perry Sun)
