Story Synopsis:
The French Connection swept the 1971 Academy Awards®, winning the top five categories. Based on the book by Robin Moore and inspired by a true story about a tough New York City narcotics officer (Hackman) and his partner (Scheider) who are assigned to bust a Frenchman dealer (Rey) and a half-million dollar shipment of heroine. DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a dated picture, but one that is quite sharp, with good contrast. Colors are well balanced, with generally accurate fleshtones, and endless blacks. The source element is revealing of artifacts and film grain. Edge enhancement can be obtrusive at times. The LaserDisc (Issue 20), by comparison, is totally undefined with limited contrast. Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a remastering effort, for which the primary contribution to the new sound mix seems to be dimensional processing of the original audio for expansiveness across the screen, as well as some spaciousness in the surrounds. The original audio has been re-purposed as well, and nicely fills the listening space, sometimes with aggressive surround engagement and notable .1 LFE activity. The source for this remastering is apparently the original mono soundtrack for effects, and the stereo recording for the music. (Perry Sun)
