Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Stephen King, The Green Mile tells the story of the Death Row section of the Cold Mountain Correction Facility. John Coffey (Duncan), a giant of a man, is awaiting execution for two brutal murders. But the guards (Hanks, Morse & Pepper) begin to notice something strange about this kind and gentle man-he seems to be able to heal others with the touch of his hands which makes them question if he really did commit the crimes he is about to die for. Watch for Sam Rockwell’s outstanding performance as an over-the-top lunatic inmate. Nominated for four Academy Awards®: Picture, Sound, Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actor (Duncan).
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 picture is beautifully rendered, with warm, fully saturated hues to accentuate the feel of the penitentiary in the sultry South of the 1930s. Colors are rich and nicely balanced, with deep pure blacks. Images are sharp and finely detailed, down to the beads of sweat on the actors’ foreheads. Some scenes, however, appear slightly soft. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered for an experience that is visually pleasing throughout. There is no distracting pixelization or artifacts, but occasional scenes exhibit minor edge enhancement.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is an impressive listening experience that surely adds immeasurably to the dramatically riveting visuals. The audio tends to be quiescent, but fidelity is first-rate. The dialogue is remarkably natural sounding and spatial integration is noteworthy. The superbly recorded music score has impressive spatial depth and penetrates the listening space at times, substantially heightening the emotional intensity. The sound design is particularly worthy of praise for this film, in particular the crafting of sounds to render the high voltage electrical surges which impart on the viewer a viscerally haunting experience. The spatial soundfield is generally balanced toward the screen channels, but is punctuated with aggressive surround engagement to wholly capture the viewer in the dramatic momentum. Subtle layers of multidimensional sound effects provide for a convincing holosonic listening perception throughout. Bass is deep and penetrating, providing a richly wholesome low frequency foundation to the music. This is a soundtrack production that is certainly worthy of praise for its ability to fully create an immersive storytelling experience through the use of sound.
