Story Synopsis:
Based on the book by Nick Hornby, High Fidelity stars John Cusack as Rob Gordon, owner of Championship Vinyl a record store much like Spin Records here in Temecula; much like every non-chain record shop on the planet. All is right at the store-with the exception of his two clerks who insult customers who they feel have questionable taste in music, but Rob’s love life...well, he’s still searching for a girl who’ll put lead in his pencil-and help him to grow up. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD looks great, with images that are sharp and detailed except scenes in which Rob is reminiscing about the girls on his Top 5 Break-Ups List. While colors are not necessarily vibrant, they are nicely balanced with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Shadow delineation is excellent. Night club and nighttime scenes are revealing of good visual information in the darkness. The transfer is very clean, with very few incidents of pixelization or artifacts. Only a few artifacts were detected.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack offers good fidelity (albeit some tapering off of the higher frequencies) and in general has a "simplistic" feel that seems to be consistent with the mostly indoor scenes. The soundfield has the characteristic of conventional Dolby Stereo soundtracks. The music, much of it of compromised fidelity, fills the listening space with some spread into the surrounds. Sound effects are generally confined to the screen channels. The dialogue varies between having a fair consistency and a "close-miked" character. Some .1 LFE activity is noticed, but deep bass is not a prominent factor.
