Story Synopsis:
A terrible night-long downpour blocks a road in a remote Nevada desert town, leading 10 strangers to a rundown motel. Among the guests is a former prostitute, an actress (DeMornay) and her chauffeur (Cusack), a pair of newlyweds, and a family in despair. Add a police detective with a man in his custody and the stage is set for murder. But the Identity of who’s committing the murders will only be determined after a couple of tricky plot twists. Seems that these people have something in common with a shifty-eyed convicted felon (Vince) and his psychiatrist (Molina)...oh what a terrible storm they are in. Very cool! Includes the theatrical and extended versions of the movie. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD, framed at 2.40:1, exhibits a picture that is sharp and nicely detailed, with fine facial details and clothing textures nicely rendered throughout. The color scheme is quite natural, with accurate fleshtones, rich blood reds, and deep blacks. With almost the entire movie taking place at night during a torrential rainstorm, contrast and shadow delineation are well balanced. Viewing in a completely blackened room is recommended to appreciate the visuals in the darkness. There are slight annoying halos noticed around objects throughout, though less-picky viewers aren’t likely to be bothered by it. Pixelization is rarely a problem. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack presents a remarkable listening experience from a soundstage that is seemingly loaded with peripheral sound effects. The production of this soundtrack overall is exemplary, with a consistently active soundstage that effectively engages throughout. The backdrop for this movie is a thunderstorm, such that much of what you hear all around you are the crashes of thunder and the rain. The music is also a considerably active spatial element and has been nicely recorded. The dialogue has been well-produced, with voices that sound nicely integrated with the visuals. There’s a satisfying, poignant deep bass presence with prominent LFE channel activity. (Perry Sun)
