Story Synopsis:
When philandering real estate tycoon Rex Rexroth (Herrmann) is caught with his pants down, he hires high-powered divorce lawyer Miles Massey (Clooney) to protect him against his wife Marilyn (Zeta-Jones). By all outward appearances, she’s got the case in the bag, but Massey pulls it off and saves Rex Rexroth’s fortune. Imagine Massey’s surprise when Marilyn enters Massey’s office with an oil tycoon (Thornton) on her arm, asking for the “unpenetrable Massey Prenup.” What is she up to? Massey just can’t wait to find out! "Intolerable Cruelty" is a romantic comedy from the minds of Joel and Ethan Coen ("Fargo," "Raising Arizona"). (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD picture is sharp and nicely detailed, with excellent textures and definition that perfectly displays the rich costume designs. Stripes, tweeds, and ginghams that can cause aliasing problems on other DVDs are solid with this picture. Colors are richly saturated and well balanced, with accurate fleshtones, vibrant hues, and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are also nicely rendered. There is a little bit of edge enhancement noticed that will distract only the pickiest of viewers, and pixelization is also quite minimal for a very satisfying visual experience. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
Both the DTS® DIgital Surround™ and Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel mixes exhibit excellent fidelity, a natural tonality, and a spatially integrated soundstage. The sound design for both sound formats are pretty straightforward for a comedy with dialogue and most of the audio information is spread across the front three screen channels with the surrounds adding good atmosphere. Although most of the output from the LFE channel is located in the first two chapters, it does make its appearance known at well-placed moments throughout the presentation, which adds nice emphasis to the action on-screen. The DTS version delivers a better experience with a subtle but more open and immersive soundstage. Both sound formats were quite enjoyable to listen to. (Jeffrey Kern)
