Notes

Story Synopsis:
Following a perfect crime in Venice planned by Charlie Croker (Wahlberg), a band of thieves celebrate a $35 million jackpot. When Steve (Norton) double crosses the entire group and murders John Bridger (Sutherland)-the master safecracker-Charlie plans vengeance and rallies all of his buddies who worked on The Italian Job for another big heist to take back the gold. But he employs the help of one mastermind who wasn't in Venice...Stella Bridger (Theron), John’s daughter and safecracking prodigy. The thieves meet in Los Angeles, Mini Coopers and all, and plan vengeance against Steve. Based on the 1969 film written by Troy Kennedy Martin.

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a stylish picture that makes good use of deep shadows to contrast the visuals during the opening “job” sequence in Venice. Colors are rich and well-balanced, with accurate fleshtones and the deepest blacks. The paint jobs on the red, white and blue Mini Coopers pop from the screen. Still, there is a bit of an understated, moody appearance that complements the storytelling. A few flecks of dirt are noticed in the source element. Edge enhancement can give the picture a harsh appearance, especially in Chapter 5 with the high contrast of the snow-covered Alps. Pixelization is not terribly distracting, but does cause a slight “digital” quality at times. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack sports wonderful fidelity. The soundstage has somewhat of a characteristic balance toward the screen channels. Much of the spatiality comes from ambient effects, but most of the dimensionality comes from the music. The sonic character is clean with distinctly recorded effects, especially those rendering the aural details of the covert “jobs.” There are selected occasions for which there is notable soundstaging and an energetic presence of surround activity all around, such as the dramatic explosion in Chapter 14. Deep bass, when present is clean and rather articulate, especially with the music. LFE activity is punctuated in usage yet certainly effective. (Perry Sun)
