Story Synopsis:
While filming part one of The Life Aquatic, a marine documentary With Steve Zissou (Murray), Esteban du Plantier (Cassel) is eaten by a shark. Devastated, the eccentric oceanographer Zissou sets out for revenge on the fish. Among those aboard The Belafonte and joining Zissou on his journey are crew members Ned Plimpton (Wilson) and Klaus Daimler (Dafoe); Steve’s estranged wife, Eleanor Zissou (Huston), and journalist Jane Winslett-Richardson (Blanchett), who is writing a piece on Zissou. The underwater creatures was created by stop-moion animator Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach). (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture nicely supports the quirky storytelling, with the Zissou team’s signature blue jumpers and reddish-orange beanies appearing nicely saturated. Although fleshtones can appear a bit ruddy at times, colors are generally well balanced. The picture can have a slightly soft appearance, but details are adequate throughout. Only minor pixelization and edge enhancement are detected, but nothing terribly distracting. Nonetheless, the picture serves its purpose as an entertaining aspect of the movie. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
Without much real depth into the surrounds, the Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround™ 5.1-channel soundtracks can become rather one-dimensional, but surrounds are used fairly well with the presentation of music. The LFE channel is not used with great effect, mainly as a low level adaptation of the full range channels. Dialogue can sound forward and smeared, without any real definition when multiple people are speaking. Tonality matches on-screen environments nicely, but this is really the only aspect of this soundtrack that can be described as exemplary. The DTS track adds slightly better definition in the dialogue and low end. (Danny Richelieu)
