Story Synopsis:
Winner of three Academy Awards®, Life Is Beautiful is the acclaimed story of charming but bumbling Guido (Benigni) whose colorful imagination and ability to make the world a magical place becomes doubly important when the ugly realities of World War II threaten the serene lives of Guido and his beloved wife (Braschi) and adorable son (Cantarini). It is only the second movie to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film (“Z,” 1969).
DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic DVD, viewed in component video, exhibits good image quality with generally sharp and detailed imagery. Color fidelity is quite natural with accurate fleshtones, warm colors and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered through the darker scenes are wanting in clarity. Occasionally, images exhibit enhanced edges, but other than lacking a natural openness, the picture is generally pleasing overall. Minor artifacts are apparent. The DVD picture measures 1.82:1.
Soundtrack:
While the original Italian language soundtrack is credited as Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1, the sound is mediocre in quality. Still, the sound has wonderful character, especially the music score that is nicely recorded. The music is at times limited to stereo and other times fully engages the 5.1 palette, with an emphasized bass beat enhanced with .1 LFE. Unfortunately, other than the music score, this is an undistinguished monaural soundtrack with ADR-processed dialogue. Between Chapters 16 and 17 the layer transition triggers a slight audio pause that is disrupting. Nonetheless, the soundtrack carries this charming, but sad story as well as the better monaural soundtracks produced. An English dubbed soundtrack option is also included.
