Notes

Story Synopsis:
Carrey is “the nicest guy” Stanley Ipkiss, a mild-mannered bank clerk who discovers a magical mask that turns his innermost desires into a live S-s-s-s-smokin’ toon action in this “wonderfully wacky” assault on the nonsenses. Ipkiss uses his new found eccentricity to capture the heart of the woman of his dreams, the stunning Miss Tina Carlyle (Diaz). The lunacy and visual storytelling is an eye-popping cavalcade of fun!

DVD Picture:
Reviewed in Issue 22, the Dolby® Digital encoded CLV and CAV Special Edition have been updated with the newly released DTS® Digital Surround LaserDisc version. Previously, a Dolby Surround version of the same transfer was reviewed in Issue 13. All four are credited as THX®-digitally mastered and look exemplary in all imaging aspects. The DVD version is not credited as THX but contains much of the same supplemental material as the Special Edition release (ID3428LI $69.99). The aspect ratio on the Laser Discs and the DVD is 1.85:1. The non-anamorphic DVD picture quality is the best of the group with slightly more detail and sharper images. The DVD appears more natural with slightly better color saturation and shadow detail as well. The slight chroma noise on the LaserDisc is not apparent on the S-Video or component video DVD outputs.

Soundtrack:
While the Dolby Digital 5.1 discrete soundtracks are wonderful, the DTS soundtrack dramatically enhances resolution and low level detail with more defined discrete spatial delineation.
