Story Synopsis:
Reviving the 1932 classic horror tale with wild visual effects and a heart-pounding Jerry Goldsmith score, The Mummy stars Brendan Fraser as fortune-hunter Rick O’Connell, who along with archaeologist Evelyn Carnarvon (Weisz), uncover an Egyptian burial site that unleashes the fierce wrath of cursed 3,000-year-old priest Imhotep. DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD, viewed in component video delivers an incredible visual experience that is rich and warm with beautiful colors and deep, pure blacks. Images are completely sharp, with superb clarity and resolution. Fine detail deep into the sets is apparent throughout the movie. The picture is often dark, but shadow delineation is exceptional, with a natural gradation between darkness and total picture black. There is no distracting noise or artifacts, though sometimes imagery seems a little hard-edged. Nonetheless, this is a pristine transfer that will surely delight. The anamorphic and letterbox DVD aspect ratio measures 2.30:1
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital soundtrack definitely ranks as one of the best in terms of fidelity, power, and dynamics. All elements of the sound are effectively integrated, resulting in an expansive, engrossing 5-channel soundfield. For this film, sound certainly plays an important part in communicating to the viewer the sense of urgency, suspense, and fear. A key aspect of the soundtrack is usage of the surround soundfield, which ranges from subtlety during quiet scenes, to an extremely aggressive presence during intensely emotional moments. The surrounds are even used with a musical crescendo to viscerally unsettle you. And that's just the beginning. Directional surround sound effects are aplenty, especially from the presence and curse of the mummy. The experience of the surround soundfield is further enhanced through the use of the Smart Devices Circle Surround-EX decoder. If you have the capability to extract the center back surround channel, be sure to check out Chapter 1, where you'll really experience sound behind you! The orchestral music score, composed by Jerry Goldsmith and superbly recorded, always establishes the emotional momentum. The music is expansive, dramatic, and wonderfully melodic. Score mixer Bruce Botnick did an excellent job of distribution within the discrete multichannel soundfield and with varying this approach as a further strategy in conveying the story being told by the film. For fans of bass, this film certainly will not disappoint. The effectiveness of low frequencies was particularly apparent when producing a menacing presence with the mummy. Deep bass from all channels was intense and extremely powerful at times, registering to below 25Hz. Even at around this frequency, the deep bass was highly energized. There's no doubt that The Mummy will test the mettle of your subwoofer system(s). The only aspect of the sound that was noticeably less than perfect was the dialogue. For some actors, it sounded clear and natural, but for other actors, particularly Brendan Fraser, there was evidence of close miking for that ADR "effect." Sound designer and re-recording mixer Leslie Shatz and his team, along with the other mixers deserve credit for crafting an excellent soundtrack. When experienced in its full 5.1 discrete channel glory, The Mummy is not only sure to please, but also likely to catapult you!
