Story Synopsis:
Sometimes good help is hard to find, or so thinks Grace (Kidman), an extremely religious woman waiting for her husband to return from World War II, when her daughter, Anne (Alakina Mann), begins seeing ghosts. Doubting her daughter and blaming the servants (namely the butler) and “The Others,” Grace’s concerns soon turn to horror as chilling events of the supernatural unfold. The dark and drab, often cold feeling, scenes give the movie an eerily English effect. (Jack Kelley)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a generally pleasing picture, with images that are nicely detailed, though somewhat soft. The soft appearance may be partially evident when considering the extensive layering and digital fog utilized in creating the film’s look. The appropriately dim picture exhibits satisfying shadow delineation, though contrast seems a bit low at times. Colors exhibit good balance, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Pixelization and slight edge enhancement are detected. The source element is revealing of some minor dirt and artifacts. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is usually quite reserved in dimension, yet has been nicely recorded and features quite remarkable utilization of dynamic range. There is typically a bias of the soundstage toward the screen, and the sound mix is often focused around the dialogue. During the heightened, suspenseful, and eerie moments, the music score noticeably engulfs the listener, and split surround effects open up the listening space. The dialogue is a fine production, with remarkable fidelity and notable spatial integration. In Chapter 11, the soundstage is engaged with an interesting POV perspective to accentuate the suspense and uneasiness being experienced by Grace. Deep bass is also characteristically reserved, except for viscerally prominent scenes where an abundance of .1 LFE can be noticed. (Perry Sun)
