Story Synopsis:
Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortensen light up the screen in A Perfect Murder, a savvy, seductive and classy thriller inspired by the Frederick Knott play Dial M For Murder, filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1954. Douglas and Paltrow are Stephen and Emily Bradford Taylor-a supposedly devoted husband and his seemingly faithful wife. When Stephen hires Emily’s lover (Mortensen) to kill her, his perfect plot for murder twists madly out of control.
DVD Picture:
The picture quality, on both the anamorphic widescreen DVD and the LaserDisc, is stunning. Completely natural in appearance, the pictures exhibit vivid colors, natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. The DVD, when viewed through the component video output, renders colors that are much more controlled with better resolution. While the LaserDisc is exemplary in shadow detail, the DVD’s rendering is even more natural. The LaserDisc and DVD aspect ratios are 1.78:1.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtracks on both the DVD and LaserDisc and the matrix PCM soundtrack on the LaserDisc are excellent. The music score is wonderful and one of the finest elements of the experience. Bass response is very deep and natural sounding, with engaging moments of .1 low frequency effects. Surround is aggressive, with an enhanced holosonic soundfield by discrete surrounds on the DVD. With dialogue levels matched, the matrix version is often more spatial sounding, and also resolves low level ambience better than the discrete. The resulting experience, whether matrix or discrete, is exceptional sound design.
