Notes

Story Synopsis:
Martin Scorsese’s 1980 boxing ring extravaganza, is based on the book by middleweight champion Jake La Motta. DeNiro stars in a legendary performance as LaMotta along with an Oscar®-winning performance by Pesci as Joey, his guardian younger brother. DeNiro is seen first as the fighting fit young contender at his prime, followed by a 60 pound overweight LaMotta through the years of his decline (DeNiro actually put on the weight). This is a film about dreams, loneliness, and the frustration LaMotta suffers from his inability to reconcile himself either to Joey or his wife (Cathy Moriarty).

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.82:1 DVD picture looks much better than the previously released non-anamorphic DVD. The black-and-white imagery is haunting with deep blacks, bright whites, and excellent contrast. Images are sharp and nicely textured. The picture is much smoother, while retaining finer details. There is some pixel breakup, but edge enhancement is not a problem with this DVD. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
he Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack of this special edition release still shows dated fidelity, with a tapered upper midrange and a slight distorted buzz in the dialogue. Surround activity seems to be a low level echo of the front main channels, without providing much of an engrossing experience. The front soundstage is rather dispersed, with very little stereo delineation between the front left and right channels to create phantom imaging outside of the center of the screen. (Danny Richelieu)
