Notes

Story Synopsis:
The Shawshank Redemption is based on the novella by Stephen King. It is a moving drama about a mild-mannered banker, Andy Dufresne, sentenced to life in prison for two murders he didn’t commit. The story is warmly narrated by a seasoned and well-connected convict named Red (Freeman) who befriends Andy and is witness to the many surprising ways he finds to cope with his incarceration. The Ohio State Reformatory, where the movie was filmed, provides a chilling reality.

DVD Picture:
The 1.78:1 anamorphically enhanced DVD, viewed in component video, exhibits a solid picture with deep black levels and excellent clarity. A completely blackened room is required due to the lack of visual information in the darker scenes. Colors are naturally rendered with subtle fleshtones, deep blacks and good balance. Images are sharp and detailed, though some scenes appear somewhat harsh and pixelized.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is consistently multidimensional, but is also often confined to the screen channels. Surround envelopment is typically subtle with minimal engagement of the split surrounds. Dialogue sounds nicely integrated with the visuals, but the narrative is strangely distributed across the screen. Low frequencies are mainly present with the music but also occasionally with effects, aided by the .1 LFE.
