Notes

Story Synopsis:
Graham Hess (Gibson) is a former preacher and widower who shares his Bucks County, Pennsylvania, farmhouse with his two children and brother, Merrill (Phoenix). When the family is awakened one morning to find bizarre crop circles in their corn field, strange things begin to happen. It isn’t long before creatures from another planet are starting to leave Signs in crop fields around the world. They are coming. And they are hostile. How can a man who has lost his faith find the courage to save his family? M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable") has, once again, created another thrilling tale that is both horrifying and poignant, well-written and powerfully performed. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a nicely rendered picture in all aspects. Images are sharp and nicely detailed, with satisfying shadow delineation and contrast. In the darker scenes-like those at night in the cornfield and in the basement in Chapter 18-there is just enough visual information to heighten the suspense. Colors are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones, though blacks can be more of a dark gray. The intermittent flashbacks are visually distinguished with slightly higher contrast, true blacks, and slight blue tones. There is some fine detail break-up caused by pixelization, and there is only some minor edge enhancement. Film grain is inherent in the source element, and adds a gritty texture to the picture, at times. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital Surround EX™ soundtrack has been very well-produced. Much of the audio is of a relatively quiescent nature, and as such, the sound can be equally as important as when it is prominent in audibility. For example, there are some poignant instances of dramatic dynamic range engagement. The sudden onset of some sounds in the midst of near silence can be enough to jolt you! Another distinguished aspect of this soundtrack is the music score, which has been very well-recorded, and nicely floats across the screen with notable depth into the surrounds. The rendering of atmospheric effects within a three-dimensional soundstage is outstanding, sometimes really creating the illusion of being wholly immersed, such as in the midst of the cornfields. One factor that certainly contributes to this is the back surround channel, an effective element of this soundtrack’s spatial character. The low-end is notable in terms of the deep bass foundation to the music, as well as some selected instances of creative engagement. The dialogue is a state-of-the-art recording, and basically excels with the exception of Mel Gibson’s voice sounding a little forward. (Perry Sun)
