Story Synopsis:
Based on the book by Stanislaw Lem, Solaris has previously been on the big screen with the Russian versian directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. Aboard a distant space station orbiting a mysterious planet, a goup of terrified astronauts are experiencing a host of strange phenomena. When psychologist Chris Kelvin (Clooney) arrives to investigate, and interrogate the crew to find out what has happened, he is faced with a power that puts his sanity to the ultimate test. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits incredibly intriguing images that are richly saturated with bold colors that contrast the deepest blacks. Images are sharp and nicely detailed, with excellent contrast and shadow delineation. The bright lighting on the space station provides an isolating, sterile atmosphere, while blue hues contribute a cold feeling that is visually contrasted by the warm browns and golds in the visions that eventually haunt Chris Kelvin. There is virtually no edge enhancement worth mentioning, but minor pixelization is detected. A candidate for D-VHS® D-Theater™, we hope! (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack has been very well-recorded and nicely produced, if only being characteristically reserved in dimension. The elements have been convincingly integrated for a listening experience that is somewhat subtle, yet also vital to the storytelling for the movie. Spatial soundstaging is usually limited to the screen channels, with the surrounds selectively engaged for music and effects ambience. The superb-sounding music score effectively wraps around the listener with an engulfing presence, and also sounds nicely panoramic across the screen. The dialogue sounds abundantly natural in spatial consistency and tonality. (Perry Sun)
