Story Synopsis:
The Spanish Prisoner is David Mamet’s cunning thriller about the “oldest con in the book.” Campbell Scott plays Joe Ross, inventor of a secret formula that is about to make his employer (Ben Gazzara) outrageously wealthy. Joe, however, suspects he will not be compensated for his contribution, and when he confides his fears to a new acquaintance (Steve Martin)-he sets the wheels of deception into motion.
DVD Picture:
The DVD, when viewed in the component anamorphic format is nicely rendered throughout. Images are sharp and detailed, with excellent vertical and horizontal resolution. Color fidelity is slightly inconsistent, appearing slightly plugged-up and wanting in definition in darker interior scenes, while well lighted exterior scenes appear very natural. Fleshtones are generally accurate, colors are rich and warm and blacks are deep and solid, though sometimes lacking detail. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered throughout. The anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio is 1.78:1.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital soundtrack is Dolby Surround matrix encoded. Stereo is extremely limited with the larger part of the movie being monaurally directed and dialogue-prominent with sparse, but wonderful, music and stereo ambient sound effects. Surround is both subtle and aggressive, though limited.
