Notes

Story Synopsis:
The latest from David Mamet, Spartan features Val Kilmer in the role of Robert Scott, a secret service agent assigned to the investigation of Laura Newton (Kristen Bell), the missing daughter of a government official. But even after the media reports that Laura’s body had been recovered, Scott and rookie officer, Curtis (Luke), take on an unofficial and extremely dangerous investigation. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture has a dark, stylish appearance that is visually complementary to the suspenseful storytelling. There are plenty of scenes awash in cool bluish overtones and colors are nicely saturated with deep blacks and well-balanced fleshtones. Viewing in a completely blackened room is recommended for the movie’s many dark scenes, but shadow delineation and contrast are excellent. The picture has a solid quality, and images are sharp and nicely textured. Some scenes, however, do exhibit a soft appearance that occasionally seems slightly smeared. There are a few source element artifacts noticed, but nothing that should be considered excessive. Edge enhancement is not much of a problem with this title, though pixelization is detected. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack exhibits very good fidelity and tonality. Dialogue reproduction is accurate and well-placed within the listening space. Channel separation across the front three screen channels is excellent, as well. There are a variety of sonics thrown at the listener, as this soundtrack jumps from being very dialogue driven, to a tension-filled soundtrack that builds based on how music interacts with the on-screen suspense, to one that relies on accurately placed precise sound effects like gunshots. This is just a very smooth soundtrack that is quite pleasing to experience. Nothing flashy, just a well done sound mix. (Jeffrey Kern)
