Story Synopsis:
Speed is the action suspense thriller about a crazed and vindictive extortionist (Dennis Hopper) who has rigged a city bus to blow if the bus slows to below 55 miles per hour. Keanu Reeves plays a fearless SWAT team specialist who, teaming up with a passenger (Sandra Bullock) who takes the wheel, risks all to get aboard the rigged vehicle to prevent a major catastrophe.
DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic widescreen DVD has been sourced from a composite digital master and exhibits noticeable aliasing problems and moiré. These artifacts are more pronounced than those apparent the new DTS LaserDisc and on the previous composite LaserDiscs reviewed in Issues 12 and 24. Otherwise picture quality is about the same with slight improvement in color resolution and fidelity. There is slight chroma noise apparent but less than on the LaserDiscs and some artifacts, but otherwise the picture is sure to please. The DVD is framed at 2.30:1.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital credited 5.1 discrete soundtrack is actually the same 5.0 discrete Dolby Digital soundtrack as the previous Laser Disc. While low level ambient sounds are not audible on the Dolby Digital, though reproduced on the matrix PCM and DTS® Digital Surround version, the soundtrack is nicely produced with an aggressive split surround presence that effectively complements the stereo sound effects. The music score is dynamic and well recorded with deep bass response. The DTS Digital Surround version has superb clarity and dynamics as well. There are some really terrific sounding scenes throughout, though the .1 LFE channel is not used for added deep bass emphasis on either discrete version.
