Notes

Story Synopsis:
Based upon the novel by John Le Carré, The Tailor Of Panama is a difficult-to-categorize title: somewhat of a satirical spy thriller. Ruthless, British spy, Andy Osnard (Brosnan), may have been banished to Panama, but he’s got a secret weapon-Harry Pendel (Rush). Harry is a cockney ex-con who has re-invented himself as a popular tailor to the rich and powerful of the country, finding his sense of safety and security from his American wife, Louisa (Curtis). But Harry’s talent for storytelling compels him to weave an elaborate tale that’s not only taken as truth, but sets off a chain of events that threatens to destroy everything he treasures most in life.

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits images that can be nicely rendered. Colors are warm, and generally well-balanced, with deep blacks. Contrast seems a bit low, with limited detail at times. Otherwise, the picture is generally sharp. Edge enhancement is very prominent, but signs of pixelization are infrequent. Overall, the picture has a somewhat smeared and undefined character. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack features fine fidelity but also sounds noticeably subdued. Overall volume level seems somewhat lower than expected, and is at least partially attributable to the slightly higher than usual dialnorm offset (-6 as opposed to -4 dB). The dimensional scope of this soundtrack is noticeably reserved, and generally limited to the screen channels. Deep bass is also constrained, and the .1 LFE is basically a non-factor. The nicely recorded music is limited in spatial distribution. (Perry Sun)
