This Is Spinal Tap is a 1984 mock rockumentary directed by Rob Reiner and starring members of the fictional heavy-metal/hard rock band Spinal Tap. The film satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard-rock and heavy-metal bands, as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rockumentaries of the time.

Story Synopsis:
This Is Spinal Tap is Rob Reiner’s “rockumentary” depicting the band’s ill-fated 1982 U.S. tour. Marty DeBergi (Reiner), in a series of hilarious interviews and archival film clips, introduces us to the band while following them on the road-a mostly disastrous event-and we are treated to some hilarious scenes, the occasional banterings, missed opportunities, cancelled gigs and getting lost on their way to the stage.
DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic DVD features a subtly more natural color balance than the LaserDiscs reviewed in Issues 12 and 25. Fleshtones do not appear as orange, and colors are vivid with deep blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed throughout, and exhibit better clarity when compared to the LaserDiscs. Still, the film, made documentary-style is, perhaps purposely, grainy with noise and artifacts. The aspect ratio is 1.70:1.
Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is virtually identical to the matrix PCM Dolby® Surround on the LaserDiscs. Fidelity in inconsistent throughout with a predominant monaural focus due to the documentary flavor of the movie. The music segments were remastered from the 16-track master.
