In Terry Gilliam's fantastic voyage through time and space, a boy escapes from his gadget-obsessed parents to join a band of time-traveling dwarves. On their journey, they visit Napoleon (Ian Holm), Robin Hood (John Cleese) and King Agamemnon (Sean Connery), among other popular figures. It's a giddy, visually outrageous fairy tale, a revisionist history lesson and a satire on technology gone awry -- all wrapped into one adventure.

Notes

Story Synopsis:
Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits is a wonderfully imaginative and off-the-wall adventure-fantasy-comedy that trips through time and space with lots of special effects, action and humor. We join young Kevin (Warnock) and six time-travelling dwarves who befriend him while they are rampaging the heavens and history as well. Along the way, Kevin meets Napoleon, Robin Hood and King Agamemnon and visits the Titanic as it sinks. Eventually the group land in a place with strange creatures controlled by the Supreme Being. The set designs are marvelously inventive and visually mesmerizing with super special effects. The music was by ex-Beatle George Harrison. This is a special treat for the entire family.

DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic DVD exhibits images that are generally sharp and detailed, with good shadow delineation and contrast. The darkest scenes are wanting in more visual information and definition. Minor compression pixelization and occasional artifacts are apparent, but the DVD picture is generally pleasing throughout. The Anchor Bay and Criterion discs, both matted at 1.85:1, appear to be the same transfer.

Soundtrack:
The matrix Dolby® Surround soundtrack is a quite conventional sound mix. The use of the surround soundfield ranges from barely existent to aggressive in the presence of music and poignant sounds.

DVD/Previously Reviewed LD Comparative Review:

The non-anamorphic DVD appears more naturally rendered than the LaserDisc reveiwed in Issue 13, though the difference is subtle. Images are generally sharp and detailed, with good shadow delineation and contrast. Finer detail is noted in the backgrounds. The darkest scenes are wanting in more visual information and definition. Minor compression pixelization and occasional artifacts are apparent, but the DVD picture is generally pleasing throughout. The Anchor Bay and Criterion discs, both matted at 1.85:1, appear to be the same transfer.

The matrix Dolby® Surround soundtrack on both DVDs and the previously reviewed LaserDisc are quite conventional sound mixes. The use of the surround soundfield ranges from barely existent to aggressive in the presence of music and poignant sounds.
