Story Synopsis:
After the Earth is destroyed by an alien race over a thousand years from now, a few surviving humans shuttle around the galaxy in spaceships trying to find someplace safe to reunite. Young Cale (Damon) is in possession of a map detailing the safe haven of the space station Titan, and with the cooperation of Korso (Pullman), Akima (Barrymore), and some friendly aliens, he sets out to find it. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
Amazing. Simply amazing. The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits an animated picture that is so pristine and dimensional, that some of the space scenes almost look real. Colors are bold and vibrant, with deep, pure blacks. Hues are solid, with no apparent chroma noise. The animation is sharp and finely detailed, with no distractions that I could find anywhere. This is a beautiful picture in all aspects of image quality. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround™ 5.1-channel discrete soundtracks both offer superlative sonic listening experiences, filled with prominent moments of dynamics, energy, dimension and sheer excitement. Both versions will certainly not disappoint, but the DTS soundtrack was found to offer slightly greater depth in the low-end, as well as marginal refinement in the higher frequencies, as well as dimensional placement. The fidelity is first-rate, and although the audio does get rather loud at times, the tonal balance is perceptually neutral, and therefore peak-volume sounds should not be excessively bright. The ADR-produced dialogue is nicely recorded, and has a presence that seems rather well-integrated with the visuals. The soundstage is consistently wide and deep throughout, and split surround engagement substantially enlivens the listening space. The use of a back surround decoder, such as the SMART Devices CS-3X, Jr. will offer an enhancement of the surround soundfield, with subtle enhancement of spaciousness. Low frequencies are downright outstanding with this soundtrack, and are delivered with a clean-sounding presence, substantial depth and occasional system-threatening intensity to well below 25Hz, all around you. The .1 LFE is certainly a prominent factor. The music is nicely recorded and is adequately immersive, albeit with balance toward the screen. This is a very well-produced, lively and energetic soundtrack that will surely excite and entertain to full satisfaction. (Perry Sun)
