Story Synopsis:
Ethan Hawke stars as Jake Hoyt, a motivated rookie cop who faces the next 24 hours of his Training Day under the watchful eye of veteran undercover narcotics officer Alonzo Harris (Washington). Before the day turns to night, Hoyt discovers that Harris has managed to blur the line between cop and criminal. And trying to do the right thing on his first day on the job is more challenging and life-threatening than Hoyt would have ever dreamed. In his own words: “I should have been a fireman.” This is a very well-scripted psychological thriller, with superb Oscar®-nominated performances by Hawke and Washington (Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor, respectively). (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits crisp images with excellent detail. Contrast and shadow delineation are also excellent. Colors are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. There is a small amount of edge enhancement noticed, but the picture is otherwise virtually free from distraction. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a production of very fine fidelity and commendable spatial attributes. The sonic image projected is wonderfully expansive and enveloping, consistently taking effective advantage of the multichannel palette. The music is a commendable recording, and aggressively fills the listening space at times with prominent deep bass content. In fact, the music seems to be the most prominent spatial element of the soundtrack. Soundfield generation in the presence of effects is also very compelling, both in terms of projecting the sense of atmosphere and with heightened, pinpoint directionality, which substantially takes advantage of the split surrounds. Basically, if you seek shoot-em-up, all around aggression with gun battles, this soundtrack will certainly deliver. The sounds of the gunshots are poignant and seem rather visceral. Overall, tonality is perceptibly neutral, and this asset is especially noticeable with the dialogue, which in turn also exhibits remarkably good spatial integration. An interesting POV sequence occurs in Chapter 5, taking place from the perspective of a drugged Jake Hoyt, the rookie cop in the story. Like many other cutting-edge soundtrack productions, the often prodigious deep bass presence features very deep extension to below 25 Hz, with a clean-sounding presence and an abundance of .1 LFE. This is a first-rate sonic presentation that should optimally deliver to the expectations of the soundtrack’s storytelling. (Perry Sun)
