Story Synopsis:
After dropping his broken down car off at a nearly-deserted town’s only mechanic (Thornton), Bobby (Penn) meets the beautiful Grace McKenna (Lopez) and her husband, Jake (Nolte)-and his one-time goal of getting out of town vanishes in the face of survival. Grace and Jake suck Bobby into a deadly game of lust, madness and money. Both offer him a way out-kill one for the other. John Ridley’s screenplay is based on his book “Stray Dogs.”
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD appears to be the same transfer as the previously issued DVD. The picture is stylized with a gritty appearance, and is revealing of film grain throughout. Overall, images are sharp, with fine details. Definition is nicely rendered throughout. Colors are rich and bold, with vivid hues and deep blacks, though fleshtones can seem a bit reddish at times. Edge enhancement and pixelization are noticed, but are not terribly obtrusive. Minor aliasing problems are apparent on occasion. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack defines the music scoring with a wide delineated soundstage, but the soundtrack sounds to be a 4.0 mix, with no discrete surrounds. Bass extension is strong, even though there are no apparent .1 low frequency effects. Dialogue sounds natural with good spatial integration for a satisfying sonic experience. (Gary Reber)
