Story Synopsis:
Grady Tripp (Douglas) was once one of those upstart Wonder Boys of the literary world. Since then, he’s been languishing as a creative writing professor too terrified of failure to write anything else himself. Along the way, he’s gotten the university chancellor’s wife (McDormand) pregnant, fallen for a student who rents a room in his house (Holmes), and has to cope with his eccentric editor (Downey), and a troubled student genius (Maguire). Based on the novel by Michael Chabon. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a beautiful picture with crisp images, nicely rendered clarity and depth. Colors are rich and warm, with nicely balanced fleshtones and deep, pure blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are pleasing throughout. There is some edge enhancement apparent, at times giving the picture a hard edge. Pixelization is also an occasional distraction. Source element artifacts are infrequent for a picture that is quite clean throughout. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.0-channel soundtrack is mostly limited to the screen channels, and is of a quiescent nature. This is clearly a dialogue-centric sound presentation, with voices integrated convincingly with the visuals. Imaging across the screen is amply wide, with subtle depth. The surrounds are typically quiet throughout but at times are very subtle with the music. The narrative from Michael Douglas has been nicely recorded and is presented at a comfortable listening level. Low frequencies are adequate with some of the music but are otherwise an essential non-factor. (Perry Sun)
