Amid increasing fear and bigotry, Professor Charles Xavier provides a safe haven for powerful outcasts like Wolverine, Rogue and Storm, who are genetically gifted mutants -- and the world's newest, most persecuted minority group. In an explosive battle for freedom and honor, the X-Men take on Magneto and his band of evil mutants, who relish the public's paranoia.

Story Synopsis:
Professor Xavier (Stewart) is the brains behind a talented group of genetically altered humans known as the X-Men. These mutants are a worldwide peace-keeping force against the bad mutants who wreak havoc on the world. Bruce Davison is a skeptical senator who seeks to identify and restrict the movements of all mutants-good or bad, so Magneto (McKellen), semi-bad mutant, decides to strike out against him by going after the X-Men’s compound. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits image quality that, at times, can be stunning. The picture opens with an intentionally contrasted, monochromatic setting during the holocaust. As the movie progresses, the dark picture becomes more vibrant and balanced, though director Bryan Singer and cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, ASC opted for a more muted look compared to other films based on comic books. The result is a dark picture with vibrant spot colors, with excellent balance throughout. Contrast and shadow delineation are superb, with even the darkest scenes appearing well defined. Images are sharp and finely detailed into backgrounds, with excellent depth and clarity. Contrast and shadow delineation are superb, with excellent visual information between darkness and picture black. Distractions, like edge enhancement and pixelization, are minimal, if noticed at all. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is a wonderful soundtrack production, offering both subtle and prominent instances of convincing holosonic soundfield rendering. The tonal balance is perceptually neutral, and in fact the need for re-equalization is likely to be obviated. Fidelity is definitely first-rate, and the recording’s refined attributes are uncanny. The soundstage is consistently expansive thoughout, with substantial depth across the screen and into the split surrounds. The music is a remarkable recording, and is distributed throughout the listening space, fully immersing you. Although the split surrounds are engaged to very good effect, the use of a back surround decoder, such as the SMART® Devices CS-3X, Jr. will offer an additional layer of spaciousness all around you. The energized moments of dimension are of course exciting, and the more prevalent, relatively quiescent sequences also demonstrate the effectiveness of movie sound through both dimension and the creative selection of sound effects. Another remarkable attribute of the soundtrack is the dialogue. The voices’ natural-sounding attributes are truly compelling and their integration with the visuals is noteworthy. The low-end is both subtly and substantially utilized, sometimes with .1 LFE activity but typically with extension to below 25Hz. This is definitely and exemplary soundtrack production which demonstrates the value of effective sonic creativity through both grace and aggressiveness. (Perry Sun)
